Description (provided by Dr. Irene Topor):
“Arizona Association for Athletes who are Blind or Visually Impaired was created in November 2002. We are an affiliate of the national organization, United States Athletic Association for Blind Athletes. The chapter activities have mushroomed over the last two years due to some hard working individuals. Goalball games are taking off in the adult as well as the younger athlete group. Several tournaments have been played this year. In addition to goalball, there are Saturday events that include a running eyes for the blind club, beep baseball games, rocks and ropes climbing at a local gym, tandem cycling, and a "more than a marathon event" where athletes run around a track and add up their miles toward the 26.2 marathon distance. The parent group at the Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and Blind has been supportive of the group and sometimes sponsors Saturday events that include the AAABVI athletes. In December, we've just contracted with Cory MacDonald who will teach self-defense techniques to interested athletes in Phoenix. Finally, we are collaborating with ASDB to offer another camp of activities to athletes from May 27th- June 5th on the school campus.”
