Minnesota Goalball

What is the game?

The game is Goalball, a fast-paced sport that combines elements from soccer and bowling with orientation and sound localization skills.  The sport was invented in the 40’s to help rehabilitate war veterans who lost some or all of their vision.  The sport is part of the Paralympic Games and there is a World Championship held every few years. In the US, there is a National Championship held every year.

How do you play?

Teams play the game on a gym floor about the size of a volleyball court. There are two teams with three players on each team.  The teams set up on opposite sides of the floor.   Areas of the floor are lined with airport cable covered with tape to help the players orient and move around. Each team tries to roll the goalball, a ball the size of a basketball with bells inside it, into the other team’s goal. Each team defends their goal by diving on the floor and blocking the ball.
